An automated Hydrogen Permeation Test Rig has been developed in-house to study the diffusion characteristics of hydrogen through various materials under controlled vacuum and pressure conditions. The setup integrates multiple subsystems including rotary and turbomolecular pumps, vacuum gauges, pneumatic valves, pressure transducers, and flow controllers.

Key Features

Automation and data acquisition were implemented using LabVIEW software in combination with a National Instruments PCIe-6363 data acquisition (DAQ) module. The DAQ interfaces with all analog and digital signals for accurate monitoring and control of system parameters such as vacuum level, pressure, and valve status.

A user-friendly Graphical User Interface (GUI) was designed in LabVIEW to automate the entire test sequence—from evacuation and gas inlet to pressure stabilization and data logging. The GUI provides real-time monitoring, graphical trends, and automated recording of permeation data for analysis.

Comprehensive safety interlocks and feedback controls were integrated to ensure reliable operation of the rotary and turbo pumps, as well as protection of sensitive components. The automation significantly enhances accuracy, repeatability, and efficiency in hydrogen permeation testing.
