The dielectric constant (k), or relative permittivity (εr), of a material is a fundamental electrical property that indicates how effectively the substance can store electrical energy in an electric field. It is quantitatively defined as the ratio of the electrical capacitance of a capacitor using the material as the dielectric medium (Cs) to the capacitance of the same capacitor with a vacuum (or air, C0) between its plates: k = Cs/C0. Measurement for both solids and liquids typically involves placing the sample within a specially designed dielectric cell. For solids, the sample must be precisely dimensioned to fit without air gaps, while liquids are simply poured to fill the cell's volume.
