Overview
The aim of the Centre is to characterize a material using tools that can broadly be classified as microstructural, structural, chemical (elemental), surface and mechanical.
For microstructural characterization, the Centre is equipped with a field emission gun-scanning electron microscope (SEM), a tungsten filament SEM, and a Scanning transmission electron microscope equipped with cold field emission electron source.
Structural characterization is carried out using x-ray diffraction, while the determination of elements in the sample is carried out using energy dispersive spectroscopy. Center will soon acquire a multifuncational X-ray unit, where in residual stress measurements, texture studies, grazing incidence scattering experiments can be carried out.
With respect to determination of mechanical properties centre is equipped with an Universal testing machine and a Nano-indendtation system, there by capable of understanding mechnical performance from macro to sub-micron length scales of variety of material systems.
It is envisioned that CMCT will eventually become the premier resource in India to provide as holistic a picture as possible about any material.
