S. RAMAKRISHNAN

Scientist (Contract) | Centre for Fuel Cell Technology

Sundararajan Ramakrishnan is a dedicated Scientist at the Centre for Fuel Cell Technology, International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), Chennai, where he leads research in advanced materials for fuel cell applications and corrosion-resistant coatings. With over a decade of experience in materials science and engineering, his work focuses on developing durable metallic flow field plates, separator coatings, and nanocomposite materials for next-generation fuel cells. His research has resulted in significant innovations, including patented processes for corrosion-resistant coatings and the development of high-performance metallic bipolar plates that enhance fuel cell durability and efficiency.

Ramakrishnan is pursuing a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, where his dissertation focuses on metallic flow-field plates for PEM fuel cells. He also earned a Master’s by Research from IIT Madras, specializing in functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) reinforced electro-spun polymeric micro-layers for gas diffusion layers in fuel cells. His academic background is further strengthened by an M.Sc. in Materials Science and Technology from Pondicherry Engineering College and a B.Sc. in Applied Sciences from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore.

Throughout his career, Ramakrishnan has contributed to several high-impact publications and book chapters on hydrogen fuel cell technologies, corrosion behavior, and advanced material characterization. His research has been featured in leading journals such as Carbon and Surfaces and Interfaces, and he has co-authored chapters in authoritative Elsevier books, including "Recent Developments in Hydrogen Fuel Cell Strength and Weakness" and "High Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane – An Insight". His work has been recognized with awards for best paper presentations at national conferences and a certificate of merit in the National Level Science Talent Search Exam.

In addition to his research, Ramakrishnan has extensive teaching experience as a temporary faculty member at the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli, where he taught graduate and post-graduate courses in metallurgical and materials engineering and co-guided student research projects. He has also participated in numerous workshops and conferences on material characterization, fuel cell technology, and computational methods, further broadening his expertise in both theoretical and applied aspects of materials science. His commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions and his interdisciplinary approach make him a valuable contributor to the field of fuel cell technology and materials engineering.
