Dr Nitin Pandurang Wasekar
Dr. Nitin P. Wasekar has contributed significantly for the development of corrosion and wear resistant Ni based alloys/composites/multi-layered coatings using pulsed electroplating (electrodeposition) as a replacement for environmentally hazardous hard chrome plating.
Dr. Wasekar’s work is concentrated on indigenous development of Pulsed Electrodeposition (PED) Technology, which has gained global impetus in last decade towards economical deposition of corrosion and wear resistant bulk nanocrystalline coatings using simple infrastructure that is not available with conventional Indian electroplating industry. As a principle investigator, Dr Nitin P. Wasekar has successfully accomplished projects (DST, Tata Steel, Boeing USA, L&T and ARMREB) worth INR 163 lakh in the area of electroplating and carried out a wide spectrum of activities spanning surface engineering research, innovative technology development, technology demonstration through application development (in variety of industries from textile, automotive, aerospace to defence applications) followed by design and development of scale-up version.
The environmental friendly Ni-W/Fe-W alloy electroplating process developed by him resulted in substantial improvement in coating properties than conventional environmentally hazardous hard chrome coatings, which are subjected to ban due to environmental regulations across the world, and soon in India. The process is patented in India as well as USA to cater the export potential. Upon successful demonstration of technology, the technology transfer activity has been carried out with M/s Hyderabad Electroplating Works for know-how demonstration and subsequent transfer of this process for automotive applications.
As a diverse researcher, for the first time (i) he has developed and presented a model to estimate the grain size in electroplated coatings for corrosion and wear applications (ii) presented a model for selective electrodeposition of nano particles in nanocomposite coatings using pulsed electrodeposition utilizing pulsating diffusion layer model (iii) he has recently correlated grain size and corrosion current density (Inverse Hall-Petch type relation) utilizing a mathematical relation for nanocrystalline electroplated coatings.
Dr. Wasekar’s research marvelled at his continued contributions to the betterment of surface engineering through electroplating for corrosion and wear protection. Dr. Wasekar co-authored a book chapter, published more than 50 papers in highly reputed SCI-indexed journals and has granted 13 national and international patents throughout his scientific career so far in the field of electrochemical surface engineering. His publications have been highly cited leading to h-Index 24 (Scopus) and one of his research work is under Top 25 highly cited articles in Surface and Coatings Technology journal.
